Ted Talks

For the ted talks assignment I watched a video about how the magician David Blaine held his breath for seventeen minutes. We have been asked to decode the thesis and three main points of the ted talk.
I think that the thesis was probably that if you keep practicing for long enough you can do things that most people would not be able to do. I say that because David is supposedly not a good build to hold his breath for a long time, but the guy who had the record before David broke it had "the ideal body type" for it.
I think that one of the main points i that he tried to cheat at first but then decided that he would actually try and beat the record. Another is that he attempted and failed to beat the record and also that he preformed on Oprah and ended up beating the record

entry #8

We were asked to chose a super hero to emulate from the super hero database. The super hero we are supposed to chose needs to have a strength that is one of our weaknesses. Because my weakness is in the verbal category I chose Black Bolt. Black Bolt's super power is the ability to scream incredibly loud. I should emulate Black Bolt' abilities because unlike him I am not very loud or outspoken. I don't like public speaking but black Bolt is the leader of the in humans and if his voice did not destroy mountains he would probably have to do a lot of it.
Also, because he is a leader he probably has to make a lot of important decisions. I think that this would probably stress me out a lot

That is why I chose Black Bolt

Werner Fischer

Gasthaus manager

5790 Beach AVE

Peachland B.C.

Dear Mr. Werner

I am applying for the dish washer position at the Gasthaus on the lake that was posted in the Westside weekly newspaper. I would like to point out that I am a great candidate for this position due to years of experience washing dishes using home and industrial dish washers.

I have been washing dishes at home as long as I can remember, so I have tons of experience in this field. In 2009 and 2010 a friend and I helped dish wash at a summer camp. We used large industrial dishwashers and we were trained on how to load and operate them. I am a hard worker and excel in most subjects in school. I have also gotten work ethic for most, if not all, of my middle school terms.
I really value the job experience I will be getting from this position. I also really like the restaurant and I am happy to support the peachland comunity.
If you want to contact me you can reach me at 250-767-6654 (Home phone) or email me at tomdrydn@gmail.com
You can email me at any time and I am available for calls from 4:00- 9:30 most days after school.
Sincerely,
Tom Dryden.

Human Library

On Thursday, April the 3rd a human library was organized by Mrs.Zuyderduyn.
Many people with interesting and meaningful stories. I signed out three human book's but i only saw two because i lost track of time in gym class. i ended up seeing Mike MC the tattoo artist and Dr.Chris.

I chose Mike because being a tattoo artist/piercer seems like a very interesting career choice. He had several tattoos and piercings himself and told us that going to work didn't even feel like a job to him because he liked it so much.
I learned that in order  to do tattoos on other people you need a lot of teaching.
You have to do an apprenticeship under an experienced tattoo artist for four years or else you can't work in a tattoo shop. Mike is not yet allowed to do tattoos but i think that he is working to get there.

I chose Dr.Chris as well. He is a Tumor survive who is permanently disabled from the waist down. His right hand also shows severe Parkinson symptoms. He told us that he can walk very short distances and only with the help of an assistant. He is openly gay and shared his story of facing homophobia in the school system, both as a student and a professor. When he arrived in the Okanagan with his husband (who's name i can't remember) they helped to form a gay seniors group. He was also able to find a job teaching at UBCO thanks to kindness from the principal and other staff members.

How to find constellations

We'll start with how to find the north star (polaris).
1. Find Ursa major (the Big dipper) or Cassiopeia, this will make it will be easy easy to find the north star.
2. Find Ursa major first, just look for the formation below. look at the two stars on the edge of the cup, furthest from the handle, and follow the line between them to find the north star.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/7d/2012-08-11_23-56-28-Cassiopeia-ann-2c-27f-28d.jpg3. Then find Cassiopeia. It should be across from the big dipper and you will be able to find it with a little looking. Look for a big "W".

4.Roughly in between the two constellations is the north star.

5. Now that you've found the north star you can find Ursa minor (the little dipper)
the north star is the last star in the handle of the little dipper, the rest of the dipper extends out an will run parallel to the big dipper.

6. Next ill tell you about how to find Draco the dragon, another constellation in the same region of stars.

Draco's tail starts just above the invisible line connecting Ursa major to the north star. then it extends up to across from the second star in the big dipper's handle. There is a rounded curve then it extends down to the same level as the start of its tail. There is then a jump from there to Draco's head, which is across from the high piont in his tail.

Thats how to find 5 constellations. Thanks for reading.

Science Fair

For my Science fair project I researched the stroop effect. I learned how colored words effect reading speed.
during the project i used my learner, thinker, contributor, collaborator and innovator skills in many ways. Even though I worked alone I feel that I still displayed collaborator skills by working with my teacher and helping other students. I am a contributor because i did the entire thing myself. I am an innovator because I thought of new ways to test the stroop effect. I am a thinker because i had to think to complete this project. I am a learner because i learned about the stroop effect.

Holiday contribution

Over the holidays I gave many gifts to family and friends. I also bought a vegetable garden for an African village over Oxfam. Unfortunately i don't have any photographic evidence, but i can draw you a picture
Donating money to Africa made me feel good about myself. This donation is an example of my skillz as a contributor

Entry #1-5

*due to some technical difficulties with tumblr I have had to move my blog posts

entry#5

For lit circle I read The Fault in our Stars by John Green. It was quite good. Hazel is an interesting main character who has a unique outlook on life. Hazel meets a guy named Augustus. Hazel has cancer and does not want to hurt Augustus when she dies, so she tries to distance herself from him. (Spoilers) Then she finds out that Augustus has cancer worse than her, and he dies. Its very well written and the ending is quite sad

For my mentor ship fundraiser me and my group (Nikita, Nikita#2, Nic, Me) chose to sell hot chocolate in the morning. Unfortunately when we set up in the morning we had no hot water heater so we could not make any hot chocolate. we waited until lunch and got the heater from Ms.Cimbaro.We sold hot chocolate all lunch and made 23$, even though we spent 40$ to buy our supplies. It was kind of a waste of money, we could have all pitched 10$ and donated it all to BC children’s hospital, but the mentor ship teacher would rather have us “raise school spirit” than actually help people.

entry#3

I am very grateful for lots of stuff like my house, my families car, and that I live in a Canada.

entry#2

For Take your kid to work day I followed my mom, who works as a librarian at the west bank library
I liked how easy it was and checking peoples books out was very simple. I also liked scanning books that were being checked in and looking for damaged pages.
I did not like how boring it was, when there was no customers in the library we had nothing to do, also pulling books that people ordered from the shelves was very boring

entry#1

I chose Tumblr for my presentation of learning tool because it is simple and easy to use. It also has a large community and good privacy settings. I can also use it to follow people that I know.
I do not like how bad the search engine is at finding other bloggers
